Communicating in the Digital Age

Today’s multi-platform media environment creates unique issues whether you’re navigating a communications crisis or building your brand. When your audience is diverse—culturally, generationally, geographically, or philosophically—agility in messaging becomes even more important. But how do you communicate strongly and inspire others most effectively when your communication primarily takes place on a video screen?

Designed for professionals who seek to increase their influence, Communication for Leaders in the Digital Age (virtual) teaches disciplined communications strategies that can improve your performance in different contexts. Experience with social media is not required.

Sample Schedule

Preparation and Assessment

Prior to the program start date, you are required to complete the following:

  1. Please prepare a 5-minute talk to present virtually to the group. Ideally, the talk should be a realistic example of something you do at work – for instance, a shortened version of an upcoming presentation you’re scheduled to make. It’s best to choose a topic with a persuasive element – pitching a new initiative, explaining why you need a budget increase, etc. Feel free to include a PowerPoint, a video, or whatever best assists you in presenting. (90 mins)
  2. Submit 4-5 sentences describing a scenario in which you have had to or anticipate having to answer difficult questions from internal or external customers. This should be a realistic scenario.  The scenario can be hypothetical; for example, maybe you have to account for falling short of earning projections, announce layoffs, a hiring/salary freeze, describe why a new initiative failed, etc. Be prepared to share the scenario with the class and potentially role play how you would field questions. (15 mins)
  3. Review your company’s social media policy. What’s permitted and what’s not? (15 mins)
  4. Set up a LinkedIn profile (if you don’t already have one) and make sure you have access to your password. (1 hour)
  5. Please review the pre-reading materials that will be shared with you. (15 mins)
